2012 End of the World


This is the first in a series on 2012 end of the world scenarios. This post will list a breakdown and brief description of the major plausible scenarios and I’ll follow up with a more detailed explanation for each scenario on its own in later posts. First let me state “end of the world” does not mean the end of the Earth but more appropriately the “end of the world as we know it”.

The scenarios for a 2012 doomsday event can categorically be broken down between supernatural disasters and manmade disasters.

Supernatural 2012 World End Apocalypse Scenarios

Meteorite / Comet Impact Event - This is pretty self-explanatory. An external object (most likely a meteorite or comet, but other possibilities exist) impacts Earth with such force as to dramatically change the climate. This includes changing the sea levels and the atomspheric pollution that would naturally occur from such an impact.

IBM buying Sun Microsystems makes no sense.

The Wall Street Journal reported that IBM is in talks to buy Sun for at least $6.5 billion in cash, which would amount to about $4 billion once Sun's cash and marketable securities are taken into account. On paper, the deal could make some sense: adding Sun's server market share would give IBM more clout in its competition with Hewlett-Packard, IBM would get some software and intellectual property assets, and that price would be a nice premium for Sun shareholders disappointed with the company's sliding stock price.

IBM leads race for Satyam buy

Global IT giant IBM is understood to be the front-runner to acquire Satyam Computer Solutions, a company it named as one of its main competitors in a filing to the New York Stock Exchange in February.

The US major, said sources close to the developments, has begun discussions with Satyam's government-nominated board and expressed its desire to acquire a majority stake in the company. A team of investment bankers and lawyers from the US and Europe has been brought in to assess the size of the deal and the risks associated with it. The company is also understood to have conducted an initial due diligence on some of Satyam's major customers.
