By Moviebuzz

Frankly speaking, the Prakash Raj- Radha Mohan combo's Abhiyum Naanum is nowhere in the league of their previous oeuvre Mozhi. With a touching title like that, one would have thought the director would have a more solid script, but somehow it fails to strike a chord like their earlier film.
But having said that, if you are still looking for a different kind of cinematic experience, then, it’s worth a look. The beauty of the film lies in the outstanding performance of Prakash Raj. The film is about the relationship between a father who is extremely fond and possessive about his daughter, he comes out with a sterling performance.

The story is simple and straightforward. Reghuram (Prakash Raj) an estate manager in a tea estate near Ooty, meets Sudhakar (Pritviraj) in one of his early morning walks as the latter finds it difficult to manage his little daughter in a kids park. Reghu gets nostalgic and starts chatting up about his most priced procession- Abhi, his daughter to Sudhakar a total stranger who listens in rapt attention.

Reghu starts the story from the day his daughter was born till when she goes away after marriage. The story covers her joining pre KG, her adolescent years, and when she goes to Delhi for higher studies and comes back with a new guy in her life Joginder Singh (Ganesh Venkatraman). This is heartbreaking for Reghu the over protective father who becomes jealous, anxious and also falls into deep depression. It is a simple story that tries to say the message that you should try to understand and reach across to your children, if we have to understand ourselves.

The film starts well but somewhere along the way it peters out and just does not unfold quickly. A beggar who Abhi takes a fascination as a child is welcomed into Reghuram's family and over the years becoming a part of the family, is hard to swallow. Joginder Singh's extended family of survivors from Delhi bomb blast, Mumbai train blast, Gujarat carnage etc just doesn't wash. Joginder 'an independent journalist (??) and an economist' talking directly over phone to the Prime Minister is absurd. Some kind of logic or believability, is absent in the script.

The film's fatal flaw is its packaging, which is not convincing and at time too preachy and drags big time post interval. The Punjabi family act in the second half spoils otherwise a serious film, and drives you up the wall. Another major let down is the music of Vidayasagar, if Mozhi was his magnum opus, in Abhiyum Naanum he is falling flat. The first half looks like Prakash Raj doing Steve Martin act of Father of the Bride, while the second half is very similar to Robert De Niro meeting Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents!

Yet for an audience fed up of recent mindless love stories and action extravaganzas, this one from Duet Movies is definitely worth a dekko for Prakash Raj's performance. He is the pivot around which the film revolves. His comedy scenes in the first half are a scream, especially the way he mugs, thinking he has to pass a GK examination for parents of children applying in a prestigious school for admission in Pre- KG! And in the second half his anguish is tangible; you can feel the earnestness of his intentions and the wetness of his tears. Hats off to you Prakash, only you can do it.

Trisha as Abhi has come out with her best ever performance, and is super tops. Her outburst against her father when he comes quietly behind her as she cycles to school for the first time, and her tears in the final airport scene is well etched. Aishwarya as her practical mother is dignified, while characters like Manobala, Thalaivasal Vijay and new boy Ganesh are apt for their roles. Count among other things Preeta's eye- catching camera, with the mist scenes shot in Munnar standing out. If only Radha Mohan had a far more tighter script, it would have been far more enjoyable.

Watch Abhiyum Naanum only for the father and daughter pair – Prakash Raj and Trisha, they make the film work to a certain extent.

Verdict- Family Feel Good

silambattam ,silambattam review, silambattam movie review,

Silambattam (Tamil: சிலம்பாட்டம்) is a 2008 Tamil film, which is starred by Silambarasan and debutante Sana Khan in the lead roles. Cinematographer Saravanan directs this film which has Simbu in the role of a Hindu, Brahmin priest. Prabhu Ganesan plays the role of an inspector in 'Silambattam'. Yuvan Shankar Raja composes the music [1]. Sneha is pairing up with Simbu. It will be the first time, that Simbu plays a Hindu priest and it is also said that Simbu is doing a triple role. The film is to release on December 18th, 2008. This movie is expected to take tamil cinema in to great heights with the Simbu-Yuvan Combo and the glamourous girl Sana Khan. It is expected to be around for Deepavali, but the Christmas-New Year time is also a good time for Silambarasan to reclaim lost ground at the box office. The talented actor has not been having the best of times in 2008, but all that could change after December 18, 2008 as Silambattam is hitting theaters, carrying a fair bit of expectations. The makers have made one thing clear, this thing is a full fledged commercial, so it is known what to expect. But, it did not have been said that this is a no brainer. It will be a full length entertainer where it is got to see two Silambarasan’s in different halves of the movie in completely different appearances, one a cool dude and the other a typical traditional priest from Kumbakonam.
Silambattam is the debut directorial venture of popular cameraman Saravanan. He has admitted that the story is not entirely new to Kollywood, but the script has its share of freshness and that will be the advantage of the movie, besides its cast which, one has to admit is quite good for a directorial debut. Apart from Silambarasan, there is Sana Khan paired with the priest and Sneha paired with the more stylish Silambarasan. Sneha will be on screen for the first time after Pandi where she had a bit uncharacteristically scorched screens, it will be interesting to watch if she continues in the same vein here too. Kishore is the bad man while Santhanam and Karunas have teamed up in the laughs department. The touch of experience comes in the form of Prabhu (who has now settled very neatly into the character mode) and the veteran Nedumudi Venu who will appear as Silambarasan’s grandfather. The director has made a special mention of Sana Khan’s rural girl role which he says has come out in a life like manner.
It is coming to the highlight part that it is already familiar with, the music. The Yuvan-Silambarasan team gets it right most of the time and they seem to have done it this time too, having managed to get Ilaiyaraja to lend his voice for one song. The ‘Where is the Party’ song is already quite a rage among the youth which augurs well for the movie and with the nimble footsteps of Silambarsan (remember the ‘Dandanaka’ song from Kaalai), they must make the movie stronger. Camera has been handled by Veyil fame Mathi and so we can expect quality in that department.

While She Was Out(anchor bay)

Director: Susan Montford
Writer: Susan Montford
Cast: Kim Basinger, Lukas Haas, Jamie Starr, Leonard Wu, Luis Chavez, Craig Sheffer

For those looking for a new holiday horror film, the recent release of WHILE SHE WAS OUT is not a welcome Christmas present. The film stars Kim Basinger as Della Myers, an abused housewife who heads out on Christmas Eve for some last-minute shopping, only to be stalked by four youths intent on killing her. It sounds at first like a typical slasher-flick plot, but this film, written and directed by first-timer Susan Montford, does not stack up well against its slasher or holiday-horror predecessors.

After a 15-minute domestic disturbance between Della and her husband, the viewer is forced to watch Della on her monotonous mall visit, which lasts just as long and is just as boring as actual Christmas shopping. We watch our heroine wander from a non-copyrighted version of Starbucks to the lingerie shop to the card store and so on, leading one to wonder why the film wasn’t called WHILE SHE WAS SHOPPING. The intent is to make the audience realize how pathetic Della’s life is (her credit card is declined, the girl at the coffee shop spells her name wrong on the order), but after the first few “events,” the viewer is really just being beaten over the head with a shopping bag full of her miserable suburban life. Finally, Della departs the mall and heads to her car, only to encounter four teenage hooligans (on whose car she had left a note criticizing their two-space parking selfishness). And thus begins the most laughable part of the movie. The gang is like a mini-United Nations (one black, one white, one Hispanic and one Asian), and they look like, and are about as tough as, a Benetton ad. These suburban thugs are nothing but cultural stereotypes, and deliver lines full of trite “street lingo” that feel as forced and unnatural as if your Grandmother was talking “street.” Eventually, Della finds herself on the run through the woods, with only her wits and a toolbox that she grabs along the way to protect her from her multiculti pursuers.Basinger is one of the few bright spots of WHILE SHE WAS OUT. Her performance is actually compelling in parts, but after a while, it feels like she’s playing one generic “victim pushed too far” situation after another. A similar problem afflicts the white gang leader played by Lukas Haas, who has done fine work in past films ranging from MARS ATTACKS to BRICK. But here, he’s stuck playing one brooding-angry-teen cliché after another. This all leads up to a stereotypical “anti-Establishment” monologue that sounds like something every teen wrote in their notebook in high school, right underneath “Kurt Cobain Rulz!”What’s most shocking about this movie is the underlying fear and message it invokes: a youth-gone-wild suburban paranoia that all those below age 25 are up to something sinister and evil. It smacks of some urban legend warning why good suburb-dwellers shouldn’t go out after dark—the damn kids are crazy, nothing but gun-toting murderers ready to attack anyone. The film tries so hard to feed off those concerns that it creates totally unbelievable characters, all making completely unbelievable decisions. The horror industry has seen quite a few very effective psychopathic-youth movies in the past few years. WHILE SHE WAS OUT strives to follow in the wake of other kids-gone-wild films such as JOSHUA, FUNNY GAMES and EDEN LAKE, but ultimately its villains come across as a bunch of juvenile delinquents far more than true psychopaths.

Ghajini (2008 film),gajni

Ghajini (Hindi: ग़ज़नी) (Urdu: غجني) is a 2008 Bollywood film directed by A.R. Murugadoss and produced under the Geetha Arts banner by Allu Aravind. Releasing on December 25, 2008 in India, it stars Aamir Khan, debutante Asin and Jiah Khan in lead roles. Ghajini is a remake of Tamil film Ghajini. The Tamil version is loosely based on Christopher Nolan's Hit Memento (2000).

Ghajini is a romantic action thriller that explores the life of a once-rich businessman who suffers from short term memory loss following a violent encounter. Parts of the film were shot in the Deadpan Desert of Namibia and in Cape Town, South Africa.

[edit] Cast
Aamir Khan as Sanjay Singhania
Asin Thottumkal as Kalpana
Jiah Khan as Sunita (Medical Student)
Riyaz Khan as Police officer
Pradeep Rawat as Lakshman

[edit] Plot
The film's main story is inspired from Memento directed by Christopher Nolan. Sanjay Singhania (Aamir Khan), is a rich businessman who owns a cellular phone company named Air Voice and the events surrounding his relationship with Kalpana (Asin Thottumkal).

Kalpana, an advertisement model goes around telling her advertisement crew that she is the love interest of Sanjay. She does this in spite of she having never met him and also goes to the extent of giving an interview about her relationship to a popular magazine. Sanjay happens to hear about this through the media and wants to settle scores with her. On his way, he catches a fleeting glimpse of a young woman (who happens to be Kalpana) helping handicapped children to cross a street. It is love at first sight for Sanjay. He moves on to confront Kalpana at her advertisement studio. He is pleasantly surprised to realize that she is the same helpful woman he saw a while ago. He chooses to hide the fact from her that he is Sanjay, calling himself as Manohar. Kalpana eventually falls in love with him.

Once, while on a train to Mumbai, Kalpana saves a group of young girls from abuse by a group of goons led by Lakshman (Pradeep Rawat). After a few days, the same goons come to Kalpana's house in order to avenge their embarrassment. Incidentally, Sanjay arrives at the scene and fights off the goons, but during the ensuing fight, Kalpana is murdered. The irony showcased is that Kalpana never finds out that he is Sanjay. Lakshman then strikes the downcast Sanjay on his head severely with a metal rod. Sanjay survives the blow, but acquires anterograde amnesia because of the trauma of his brain injury. At any given time, he does not remember anything that happened more than 15 minutes back, although he frequently has flashbacks of Kalpana's murder. He determines to take revenge on those responsible for Kalpana's death. The rest of the story is about how Sanjay, along with a medical college student Sunita (Jiah Khan), goes about finding Lakshman and the goons.

[edit] Promotion
The film promos were launched on Diwali.[1]
For inital promotion of the film the producers tied up with all the leading multiplex chain and has told their employees to go bald style like that of Aamir Khan.[2]
